Celebrate St George’s
Day
County Magazine
The Bull in Wrotham is
hosting a St George’s day Charity dinner in aid of the Friends of St George’s Church, Wrotham on 23rd
April.
A similar event last
year was a great success, raising more than £300 and the owners are determined to do even better this year! Like last year, there will be flags, flowers and balloons galore, with staff and guests encouraged to wear
traditional red and white. ‘No doubt the event will culminate with ‘Land
of Hope and Glory’ and we will all raise a glass of English sparkling wine to the National Anthem’ says owner
Martin Deadman.
The menu for the night
is a celebration of English food and drink, using fresh, high quality produce from local suppliers. The chefs James Hawkes and Daniel Humbert (former owner of The Plough Ivy Hatch) are preparing classic
English dishes on the night at a set price of £25.50 (3 courses) and £21.50 (2 courses).
There will be a choice of five starters, five main courses with a vegetarian option, a cheese board of English artisan
cheeses, all accompanied by a selection of great English wines.
Diana Knox, secretary
and fundraiser for Friends of St George’s Church, will be helping owners Lygia and Martin to encourage people to donate
on the night, to add to the £2 that goes to the charity from each meal.
The Bull Hotel is the
perfect venue to host and celebrate a St George’s Day event as it is steeped in history and tradition. It originally started trading in 1385 and is one of the oldest hostelries in the country. Before that, it served as the stables for Wrotham Palace up until 1495 when it was licensed under Henry
VII’s reign. It is fitting that a venue of such heritage should host a
fundraising event for another building that dates back to the 13th century; in fact, St George’s was the
first Saxon church in Wrotham and was built in 964AD.
Owner of the Bull Hotel,
Martin is a traditionalist and patriot and enjoys supporting English heritage: ‘It is nice to see that our English saint,
St George, is being given his due recognition. This whole event at The Bull Hotel
aims to bring out the true patriots in us; let that stiff upper lip loosen a little and enjoy an evening of fun, laughter
and song, together with excellent traditional English food and wines!’.

Maitre d’ Antonio Pellegrino The service is very friendly and warm: Martin is
always serving, talking to clients and asking for feed back which he takes very seriously and discusses it with James and
the staff. To deliver a high level of service he recently employed Antonio Pellegrino a maitre d’
