The Kings Hill Directory, West Malling January 2009
We were very excited when we had a couple of
recommendations from different readers about a restaurant which had recently been taken over by new owners… one of
the readers had had a family meal for 23 people and was particularly impressed. The hotel and restaurant is situated in the historic village of Wrotham, close to the M20 at Junction 2.
It is a beautiful old inn and has an immediately welcoming feel with a log fire in the large bar area and sink in sofas.
Martin brought us the menu while we were enjoying a welcoming drink and defrosting by the fire. The restaurant offers
bar meals and a selected menu using seasonal produce and local suppliers where possible. For starters my friend chose the Gravdlax which was complemented by a lemon cream and
served with chunky bread. I plumped for the tasty Winter salad of Stilton, walnuts and pears poached in red wine with
crisp leaves. Other options available included the Cullen Skink (a smoked haddock soup), a black pudding with fresh
foie gras, apple chutney and cider sauce. Prices average £5 and portions are generous. It was difficult to decide on the main course with many tasty options available; my friend ordered the pan-fried
duck breast with a red wine and prune sauce, curly kale and mash – she was especially impressed with the sauce and perfectly
cooked duck, saying that it was the first time it was cooked to her liking in a restaurant (she is a keen cook!). I
chose the linguine served with fresh craband parsley and drizzled with chilli oil. Lovely fresh flavours and perfect
waking up a jaded palate! Other main courses included a cod fillet with shallot, garlic and wild mushroom sauce, a venison
fillet with honey roasted parsnips and thyme mash and a winter root vegetable salad with hazelnuts. Prices range from
£10 to £18 for a Sirloin steak. We could not resist the puddings…warm
treacle sponge and apple tarte tatin had to be tasted! Unfortunately someone had beaten us to the sponge and so my friend
sampled a chocolate instead. Wonderful! The combination of warm gooey pudding and cold ice cream was a true delight.
