John “Paddy” Hemingway
1919 – 2025
The last surviving Battle of Britain pilot, John “Paddy” Hemingway, has died at the age of 105. Mr. Hemingway passed away peacefully on Monday.
“His bravery and sacrifice will always be remembered.”
The history of World War II is very close to my heart. My grandparents fought at Dunkirk, D-Day, and in North Africa, eventually ending up in Germany. I grew up hearing about the war and their experiences.
For those who don’t know, The Bull restaurant – originally the bar – has pictures showing how the ceiling was covered in signatures from Spitfire pilots, with a postage stamp next to each name representing the number of planes they shot down. Take a look next time you’re there.
To finish, here’s the best quote that perfectly sums it all up:
“Never was so much owed by so many to so few.”
Winston Churchill
Cheers,
Martin
